Removing emissions equipment on a road-registered vehicle violates the Clean Air Act (42 U.S.C. §7522), with individual civil penalties up to $5,911 and higher for shops. Deletes are legal only for off-road, competition, and non-road use — and that label does not create an exemption. Check your state’s rules.
Q10: What’s the best alternative if I need to stay road-legal?
Keep the emissions system intact and focus on maintenance: run low-ash ACEA C3 oil, keep the DEF tank filled with fresh fluid, drive regular highway stints so the DPF can passive-regen, and check your recall status. Emissions-compliant tuning and a colder thermostat can improve reliability without the legal exposure.
